Artificial Bat Roosts
Austral Construction was engaged by BHP to take over and complete the Artificial Bat Roosts project at South Flank Mine, delivering the remaining civil, structural and remediation works required to bring the two purpose-built roosts through to commissioning.
Austral remediated existing earthworks and gabion baskets before completing the remaining embankment and water retention chambers. The works included conditioning, hauling and placing ore fines for embankment construction, installation of chamber liners, 20mm aggregate and RCP inspection risers, and fabrication and installation of a new concrete chamber lid.
The team also delivered access paths, safety windrows, aggregate walkways, handrails and footings, together with signage and associated ancillary structures.
Following successful commissioning of the two artificial bat roosts, Austral rehabilitated areas disturbed during construction, including removing temporary earthworks and returning floodways to their original condition.
From taking over the partially completed works through to remediation, commissioning and closeout, Austral provided the practical civil capability and delivery focus required to successfully complete this specialised environmental infrastructure.
