BHP Bridges Package 2

Austral Construction was engaged as Head Contractor to deliver a $17 million renewal package across three critical BHP rail bridges near Newman, with the works designed to extend asset life and enable the removal of track speed restrictions imposed due to the condition of the existing structures.

Austral delivered extensive preparation and enabling works ahead of the critical rail shutdowns, including construction of access ramps and crane pads, temporary and permanent roadworks, and the supply and haulage of construction materials.

During the shutdown works, Austral deconstructed and removed the existing track formation before cleaning and waterproofing the bridge decks. The team installed reinforcement and clamping bolts and plates, new high-strength S80 early-age concrete decks, fabricated ballast kerbs and under-ballast matting before reconstructing the rail infrastructure.

The works were carefully planned around tightly controlled shutdown windows to maximise productivity and return the bridges to service safely and efficiently. Following construction, Austral also rehabilitated areas disturbed by the works.

Combining detailed shutdown planning, multidisciplinary civil and rail capability and experience working on operational heavy-haul networks, Austral delivered critical bridge upgrades that improved asset condition and supported the restoration of network performance.
