Fremantle Traffic Bridge Demolition
Austral Construction was engaged by Mainline to undertake specialist marine demolition works as part of the Fremantle Bridges Alliance’s delivery of the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge for Main Roads Western Australia.
Working beneath the new bridge structure while navigation spans remained operational for vessel traffic, Austral safely removed the existing bridge structure from the whaler down. The scope included four fender trusses, eight concrete nosings and 281 timber and concrete piles measuring up to 900mm in diameter, 10 metres long and weighing up to nine tonnes each.
Austral configured its modular Flexifloat barge system as the primary operating platform, supported by a secondary laydown barge, the Triple M pusher tug and hydraulic pile shears capable of cutting piles subsea at seabed level.
Delivered within challenging tidal currents, restricted overhead clearances and an operational marine environment, the works demonstrate Austral’s specialist marine capability, adaptable fleet and ability to safely execute complex demolition works where access and operational constraints demand a highly engineered approach.
