Lake MacDonald Dam Improvement

Austral Construction delivered specialist piling and temporary works as part of the Lake Macdonald Dam Improvement Project, supporting the safe dewatering and reconstruction of the existing spillway and surrounding embankments.

Austral’s scope included the installation and subsequent removal of approximately 700 linear metres of steel sheet piles up to 18 metres long, using a combination of land and marine-based equipment. Works also included the placement of approximately 1,000 four and eight-tonne rock bags for scour protection and the installation of 340 linear metres of cofferdam waler and tie-rod systems.

To overcome complex access and marine construction challenges, Austral designed and fabricated bespoke temporary works, including sheet piling gate systems integrated with its Flexifloat modular pontoons and cantilever piling frames. Specialist vibratory and impact piling equipment was used to meet varying installation requirements.

Combining engineering-led temporary works, specialist piling expertise and adaptable marine plant, Austral successfully delivered a complex scope within a challenging dam environment.
