Mooka Spur Roads

As Head Contractor, Austral Construction delivered a $27 million civil infrastructure package at BHP’s Mooka Ore Car Repair Shop, constructing five new spur roads and the supporting infrastructure required to increase the facility’s capacity and efficiency as part of BHP’s broader 290Mtpa+ initiative.

Delivered over six months, Austral undertook significant bulk earthworks, including approximately 32,000m³ of cut and 97,000m³ of fill, together with the conditioning, placement and compaction of material required to form the new rail spur lines.

Austral delivered the associated drainage and services infrastructure, installing CSP and box culverts, stabilised sand headwalls, scour protection and stream training works. The team also installed and tested approximately 1,700 metres of combined water and sewer services and 1,700 metres of high-voltage power cabling.

The wider scope included 15 level crossings, signalling, signage and guardrails, including 1.5 kilometres of W-beam, as well as the assembly and commissioning of 20 solar lights and removal of 88 existing lights.

Combining bulk earthworks, drainage, utilities and rail interface works within a single package, Austral successfully delivered the new spur road infrastructure and associated services required to support more efficient operations at BHP’s Mooka facility.
