Santos Varanus Hub Well Works
Austral Construction delivered specialist marine, engineering and heavy-lift services as part of an oil well plug and abandonment campaign and structural integrity works across five offshore platforms around Varanus Island.
The campaign supported the decommissioning of wells and infrastructure that had reached the end of their design life. Austral provided engineering and lift planning services for a range of decommissioning activities and mobilised a 500-tonne jack-up barge and 330-tonne crane in Dampier, preparing the spread specifically for the offshore campaign.
Operating within the highly regulated oil and gas environment, Austral’s team successfully adapted to sector-specific standards, systems and processes while working alongside a diverse range of subcontractors and specialist trades as part of an integrated decommissioning team.
Delivered over 11 months, the campaign also saw the team safely respond to two cyclone events, requiring rapid planning, coordination and decision-making to protect people, plant and operations.
The project demonstrated Austral’s ability to combine marine construction, heavy-lift engineering and adaptable self-perform capability to safely deliver complex works in demanding offshore environments.
